24 players and two “Match Officials” (the Captain & Match Scribe) assembled at West Sussex G.C. for Captains’ Day on 19th May. The overnight rain was still falling as most drove down but by the time the coffee and bacon rolls had been consumed by those who managed to arrive on time… the skies were starting to clear.
The format was foursomes, with the exception of the signature hole, the “short” 6th. For those not familiar with W. Sussex the 6th is around 200 yards from an elevated tee which requires a substantial carry over a large pond to a green with bunkers and heather surrounding. The Captain decreed this would be played in Greensomes format and 2 of the first 4 Lucifers hit the green, one of them – Nigel Jupp winning a bottle of Lucifer whisky donated by the Captain for nearest the pin. There were not that many contenders from the subsequent groups!
Those Lucifers who had not played the course before, and those that had, all declared it a great success, the course was in wonderful condition and provided a very interesting challenge.
The day was won by Derek Scott & Julian Hill with 35 points from Stephen Billings & Peter Costain with 33, followed by Mark Dumas & Andrew Brice, also with 33 points on a count back which had to go to the best last 3 holes!
